Ear porn and pole dancing, these are topics that will never come up in a normal conversation. Serious and intellectual Eunice Lim is a 22 year old English Literature student at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Except when she unabashedly tells you about her hobbies, you may raise a quizzical eyebrow or two.

Proclaiming herself a lover of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR), or what her friends term as “ear porn”, Eunice emphasises that it has no sexual effects on her despite what many might think. Recorded by various youtubers online, ASMR videos attempt to trigger relaxing sensations with sounds. For Eunice, these include sounds like the flipping of books or the tapping of glass. As her ASMR sensitive friend had nicely put it, “I feel happy but I don’t know why.” Eunice hopes that she might one day buy a 3d microphone to make her own ASMR videos.

Pointing to the bruises and lesions on her skin, Eunice also expresses her joy in the sport of pole dancing which has helped her to be a more confident young lady and look past eczema, her skin condition of five years. Eunice started pole dancing as a more affordable alternative to aerial hooping after being inspired by a television programme in secondary school. Since then, she has never looked back with the support from her family and friends. She explains the misconception that pole dancing is seen as a sexualised dance in Singapore, because of the skimpy clothing pole dancers wear. In actual fact, less clothing is needed to help dancers better adhere to the pole. Swearing by its rigour and technicality, Eunice considers it more of a performance sport similar to acrobatics. Enthusiastically, she exclaims “everyone should at least try pole dancing once!”
